ABSTRACT
Observers often see the Chinese in Europe as one homogenous group. Most Chinese would agree that they share characteristics with other Chinese and relate to them in various ways — social, political and economic. Even so, closer scrutiny reveals that the Chinese are divided among themselves, and that their divisions are largely based on speech and local provenance. These divisions result in the differentiation of the larger Chinese category in to various sub-ethnic groups.
