ABSTRACT
Theoretically, a slave mode of production can exist autonomously, reproducing its productive labour through slave breeding. However, this increases the cost of that labour since it requires the maintenance of women and children during their unproductive periods, and limits the amount of surplus product that can be appropriated by the slave-owning class.
