Procopius and the Crisis of Sixth-Century Literature

Though it is impossible to judge Procopius’ works except in relation to the writing of his own day, this approach has been sadly lacking in most modern discussions. We must now therefore try to see what the intellectual and literary background was against which Procopius wrote.
