ABSTRACT

We have argued earlier that trade union membership fluctuates with the trade cycle. In this chapter, we shall see that fluctuations in the membership of the Nottinghamshire Miners’ Association followed this general rule. To postulate a strict mathematical relationship between variations in the state of trade and variations in trade union membership would be to ignore the humanity of human kind, however. All kinds of factors influence the actions of men besides fluctuations in the state of trade.
