ABSTRACT

The number of mines producing coal in Great Britain, according to the Ministry of Fuel and Power’s Statistical Digest, rose from 2,563 in 1926 to 2, 569 in 1927 and then fell to 1,782 in 1933: rising to 1,841 in 1934 and then falling in the two succeeding years to 1,758. Under the stimulus of rearmament this number rose to 1,807 in 1937 and 1,860 in 1938. Since then each year has seen a diminution in the number of mines producing coal. In 1945, there were 1,570.
