ABSTRACT

Duringthecourseofthediscussionofthevariouselementswhich constitutethehearingchildrenreadinteractionitwillhavebeennoted thatvaluejudgementsastowhatmightbeconsidered'good'practice wereindicated.Thosevarioussuggestionswhichhavebeenputforwardcanbebroughttogethertoprovideguidelinesforateacherwhen hearingchildrenread.Perhapsthemaindangerinprovidingsucha lististhatitmightberegardedasachecklistofpointstobecovered Thisisnotitspurpose;itisnotmeanttobetotallyprescriptive. Withinthecontextoftheclassroom,togetherwithanindividualchild, theteacherwillneedtoadjustaccordingtoherprofessionaljudgementsandusethosesuggestionswhichappeartobemostrelevant However,thelistmightprovideaframeworkfromwhichthosejudgementscanbemade.Thelistwasconstructedonthebasisofwhat teachersactuallydowhenhearingchildrenread,someevaluationas towhatappearedtobehelpfultoeachchild,aswellascommentsthat havebeenmadebyotherauthorswhohaveconsideredthisinteraction(e.g.NATE1985).
