ABSTRACT
Introduction Poverty cripples and kills both hope and lives on a massive scale internationally. The number of people who die from malnutrition is equal to the number that would be killed by dropping the Hiroshima bomb on an equivalent-sized city every three days.1 One Indian magazine aptly described this situation as being equivalent to a Third World War: ‘A war waged in peacetime, without precedent, and involving the largest number of deaths and the largest number of soldiers without uniform.’2
