ABSTRACT
Professor den Boer demonstrated in the first essay how, from the late eighteenth century onwards, a notion of Europe emerged in the shape of ideas. It was a notion that consisted of a plurality of conflicting interpretations of Europe, each drawing on a specific set of historical references.
