ABSTRACT

Pim den Boer (b. 1950) studied history in Leiden and Paris. He obtained his doctorate in 1987 in Leiden with a thesis entitled History as a Profession: the professionalization of historians in France 1880-1940 (English translation forthcoming: Princeton University Press). From 1978 to 1988 he was a lecturer in history at the Institute of History, University of Utrecht. In 1988 he was appointed Professor of the History of European Culture at the University of Amsterdam.
