ABSTRACT
It is commonplace to describe societies with terms such as ‘capitalism’, ‘feudalism’, ‘industrialism’, ‘socialism’, ‘authoritarianism’ and ‘totalitarianism’. Most of us will have found ourselves using these sort of words when we have tried to account for events and upheavals, or even for the general drift of change.
