ABSTRACT

In the century between 1250 and 1350 many of the cathedrals and larger monasteries carried out vast and costly glazing schemes of great richness and sophistication: Exeter, Wells, Bristol, Tewkesbury, Gloucester, Ely and York all retain glass which bears eloquent testimony to the talents of their glaziers. Their windows and those of parish churches the length and breadth of the country display common characteristics in overall design, figure style, and architectural and ornamental features which can be encompassed by the modem term, the Decorated Style.
