Something Vaguely Heretical: Communicating across Difference in the Country

Gail and Karen first met at nursery school when they were around 3 years old, and, with one or two gaps, have known each other ever since. The key differences —re social class-in our lives today probably emerged at around the age of 15, and began as that strange mix of decision and drift which seems to steer so many of us onto one path or another in the end.
