ABSTRACT
Table 10.1 shows the membership of the NUPB&PW/SOGAT (Division A) over the period 1955 to 1972. Its membership showed an overall slow but steady increase but at points in time a fall in membership was recorded for example in 1957 and 1959. The largest absolute fall in year-on-year membership changes (minus 9,644) occurred in 1971. The 1957 fall was due to loss of women members in part-time employment whilst the decline in the following year resulted from closure of a number of papermills and a fall in employment in the printing and binding trades. Membership peaked in 1970 at 192,920. Membership of the NUPB&PW and SOGAT (Division A), 1955–72
