ABSTRACT

In this chapter attention is focused on small sections of the printing, papermaking and paper conversion industries but which nevertheless are significant and are either directly part of the printing and papermaking industries or are inseparably linked to them—for example, ink-makers. Most groups covered in this chapter are highly skilled. They were all important sections of SOGAT membership but whose work was often taken for granted and whose achievements often passed unnoticed. Unlike the big battalions of general print, newspapers, magazines and cartons and packaging, they escaped the gaze of publicity. The work they produced was highly visible. However, some of the specialised skills and trades covered in this section have virtually gone out of existence, for example vellum and parchment makers and paper tube manufacturing, which served the cotton-making industry rather than the printing and papermaking industries.
