ABSTRACT

The NUPB&PW being itself the product of a number of amalgamations feared little from trade union mergers. Its members had recognised the need for further mergers by the early 1950s. The 1956 Biennial Delegate Council Meeting expressed concern at the introduction of automation and electronic processes into the printing industry in that although in the long run it would benefit NUPB&PW members, the short-term impact would be felt in the form of redundancies. The members considered this problem was best tackled by closer co-operation with other print unions for the purpose of controlling the staffing of new machines prior to any agreement being made. 1
