ABSTRACT

Norman Hepple's colour frontispiece to Mary Webb's Gone to Earth shows the rakish figure of a man standing, one foot resting on a tombstone, before a picturesquely crooked half-timbered house with leaded lights and bottle-glass windows (see Plate 25). The scene is bathed in rich, warm light from the moon at the top left-hand corner; the whole suggests a degree of uncertainty which is mitigated by the softness of the tones and the soft rhythms and organic textures of the old building and natural surroundings.
