ABSTRACT

The substantial unity of psyche and cosmos, whether as the undivided immediacy of fun or as the symbolic identity of happiness, was shattered by the new reality of capitalism. Two separate realms of being disentangling themselves from the confusions of the pre-modern world view confronted each other in suspicious silence. Nature at last exercised its claim to an independent existence, and in so doing exhausted the world of its material content. The human subject, no longer distracted by its implication in purely natural categories (its embodiment), counted this as a release rather than a loss.
