ABSTRACT
The legal path that led Amy Denny and Rose Cullender to the Bury St. Edmunds courtroom on March 10, 1662 began with the lodging of a formal complaint before Sir Edmund Bacon of the parish of Redgrave, one of the county’s justices of the peace. The trial report points out that “about the beginning of February last past, the said Rose Cullender and Amy Duny were charged by Mr. Samuel Pacy for bewitching his daughters. And a warrant being granted at the request of the said Mr. Pacy, by Sir Edmond Bacon…to bring them before him.”
