ABSTRACT
In this chapter we intend to ‘take a step back’ from the detailed consideration of specific texts in order to broaden our perspective, although examples will be drawn from the novels selected throughout the book. Although the overall emphasis of the book is on practice not theory, like any approach to literary study the genre approach inevitably involves paying some attention to more general issues. The relation of the novel to society is one such issue.
