ABSTRACT
Chapter One identifies as a defining feature of the novel as a genre its portrayal of individualized characters in a specific geographical and historical world. The novelist must construct a sense of character ‘as an identity of consciousness through duration in time’ (Part Two, p.221) and yet show that identity undergoing change as the character interacts with the social and moral forces of his or her world.
