ABSTRACT
Our understanding of the lives of both residents and staff in old people’s homes would be incomplete if it was not set in context. The environment therefore becomes a crucial factor in our analysis and in this chapter we focus on the impact of built form, on the lives of those who use residential buildings, and on their relationship with the wider community. Consideration of the social environment, although obviously related, forms the essential material of the next chapter.
