ABSTRACT
By June 1848 there was a virtually direct railway network running from Munich to Berlin, from Stettin to the Rhine and on to Paris. The steamship, gaslight and telegraph were in operation; factories and child labour had been introduced. Middle-class political parties had crystallised into the conservatives, liberals and democrats, and Marx and Engels published the Communist Manifesto.
