ABSTRACT

Supervision is the formalised monitoring of a practitioner by another person, usually, but not always, a more experienced professional in the same field. The aim of supervision is to facilitate both professional and personal development. As such, supervision is an essential component of safe and competent practice, the benefits of which have long since been widely recognised within counselling and psychotherapy. In its Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy imposes a general obligation on all counsellors, psychotherapists, supervisors and trainers to receive supervision.1
