How the research was carried out

In this chapter we describe how we chose the young people for the study, what kinds of schools and families they came from, and how we interviewed them and analysed our findings. The interviews were carried out in 1990-91, shortly before the first edition of this book was published. The findings are described in Chapter 6 onwards.
