ABSTRACT

When asked if they had ever been racist themselves, half of the young people (53 per cent) said they had. Most of the examples given involved discrimination directed at Asian people; white people were much less frequently targeted, and there were only occasional instances given of being racist to black people, the Irish and Jews. The great majority of the incidents involved name-calling. Boys in particular tended to stress that there was a large element of joking involved, and their name-calling was not intended to hurt.
