ABSTRACT

Even though, as we have shown, friends, teachers and the media often influenced the young people’s feelings of identity, they themselves considered that their parents were the strongest influence on them. In this chapter we discuss some parents’ accounts of how they came to be involved with a man or woman of a different colour, and the problems, if any, they encountered. We also discuss whether and how they tried to protect or arm their children against racism, their views on their child’s racialised and national identities, and whether they had any regrets or reservations about the mixed relationships.
