ABSTRACT

The issue of how mixed-parentage children are racialised is an important aspect of the debate about transracial adoption. The debate almost always involves the adoption by white parents of children from minority ethnic groups and is concerned with whether this practice is legitimate, or whether only ‘same-race’ placements should be allowed. There has been considerable confusion about what is meant by ‘same race’, especially in the case of mixed-parentage children, unsurprisingly, since there is still widespread confusion and debate about how best to view and treat people of mixed parentage.
