ABSTRACT

Various disciplines are all contributing to help change fairly simplistic notions about twins. Behavioral sciences too can contribute to promote a different and more complex understanding. Following twins longitudinally as they emerge from their perilous first habitat until they finally enter the community of their peers can help to put each environment into perspective and dispel certain contemporary myths and prejudices. The roots of behavioral variation are to be found in prenatal life. Of course, we are only just beginning to see twins in a different light and to know more about their origins and their first environment. Ideas may have to be calibrated, certain aspects disregarded, and perspectives adjusted or changed altogether. Nevertheless, a much richer, less stereotyped and more realistic view of twins is beginning to emerge.
