ABSTRACT

In pairs, students discuss who in their immediate family has moved (e.g. parents, grandparents, aunts) and then whether any close friends have moved. They select three or four examples and record the reasons for these movements. (This might involve some research at home.) Then call the class together and put five headings on the board:

• economic (moving for a better job or promotion)

• social (to be near family and friends)

• environmental (to be in a different kind of environment, e.g. countryside or city)

• political (to escape war and persecution)

• other

Ask the students for examples (from their work in pairs) to go under each heading. Discussion points:

• what are the main reasons for people moving?
