A community case study

Poverty and deprivation are determined by a number of complex and often inter-relating factors such as socio-economic status, lifestyle, geographical location, age, gender and community background, but primarily they are caused by high rates of unemployment and low incomes. The majority of people living on and below the poverty line are women (Oppenheim and Harker, 1996) (see Chapter 2).
