ABSTRACT

Data collection and analysis from the focus group were conducted in accordance with grounded theory (Strauss, 1990), allowing the concepts to be confirmed or modified as the study progressed. The framework method of data analysis and coding was applied throughout and themes were identified (Ritchie and Spencer, 1994). The language used

by the women and their partners when they discussed breastfeeding was examined in detail using the principles of discourse analysis (Potter and Wetherell, 1995). The Attitude to Breastfeeding questionnaire had three response categories on a Likert type scale that ranged from ‘yes’ to ‘not at all’. Each response was scored with higher scores reflecting a more positive attitude. The Knowledge of Breastfeeding questionnaire had five Likert style response categories that ranged from ‘strongly agree’ to ‘strongly disagree’. Items for both of these questionnaires were based on evidence-based material and systematic reviews.
