ABSTRACT

Primary prevention Primary prevention is the eradication of the disease agent, resulting in fewer new cases occurring. As with health promotion, some of these measures may be directed at the population at large and are sometimes a statutory requirement. Measures to prevent accidents such as the obligation to wear seat belts and crash helmets; laws relating to drinking and driving; child-proof caps on medicines; and motorway crash barriers are examples of primary prevention; as are vaccination and immunization programmes.
