The importance of the Second World War It is tempting to see the creation of the National Health Service (NHS) and the changes that it brought to the everyday lives of the citizens of the United Kingdom in a sort of ‘Big Bang’ scenario made up of:

● the election of the Labour Government in 1945 ● the passing of the NHS Act in 1946 ● the actual setting-up of the NHS on 5 July 1948.
