ABSTRACT
For the first five years of his reign, William the Conqueror was kept busy establishing his rule and wiping out pockets of opposition. There was relatively little difficulty in southern England. A few Anglo-Saxon leaders, most notably Hereward the Wake in the fenland near Ely, did attempt to resist Norman domination, but they were no match for the Conqueror.
