ABSTRACT

Society can be described as comprising those who are children and those who are not. Categorization of an individual into one or the other group, at any moment, requires recourse to the society’s definitions and understandings of what a Child is for that interactive or social moment. Various scientific and social disciplines have provided us with terms for labelling and understanding the defining features of children. For example, the work of psychology enables children to be defined as immature but developing with physiology and psychology working in tandem to define developmental milestones. Psychology can be used to define children as cognitively linguistically, emotionally and socially precompetent, but developing toward key sets of competencies.
