ABSTRACT

As the formation of character is central to the role of education, so is the cultivation of organizational character central to the role of school leadership. Thinking about school character is not much different from thinking about individual character. When we think of individuals with character, our thoughts point to their integrity, reliability, fortitude, sense of purpose, steadiness, and unique qualities of style and substance that distinguish these persons from others. Substance, distinctive qualities, and moral underpinnings are particularly important. Leaders with character anchor their practice in ideas, values, and commitments, bring to their practice distinctive qualities of style and substance, and are morally diligent in advancing the integrity of the schools they lead (see, for example, Sergiovanni 2000).
