ABSTRACT

Abegglen, James c. The most influential author on Japanese business and management, Abegglen's pioneering work, The Japanese Fadmy, set the focus and direction of future analyses of the Japanese management system. To date, he has authored or co-authored ten books, including two other volumes receiving significant attention: Kaisha: The Japanese Corporation (with George Stalk, Jr:) and Sea Change: Pacific Asia as The New World Industrial Center. Abegglen first came to Japan in 1945, living and working there a majority of time since then. In 1965 he was one of the founding officers of the Boston Consulting Group (BeG) and established BeG's Tokyo office. Eighteen years later he established Asia Advisory Services. Abegglen also remained active in academia through his position as a faculty member at Sophia University, where he was director of the university's Institute of Comparative Culture from 1987 to 1990. Although he did not coin the term 'Japan, Inc.," he is widely associated with it because of his active commentary on Japanese business through his writings in business periodicals, both in and out of Japan.
