ABSTRACT

Despite the uncertainty which managers may face in determining the types of crises which an organization may face (which we address in Chapters 3 and 4), regulations and legislation affecting the organization in the context of a crisis or business interruption are well known. In this chapter, we navigate through some of the important areas of legislation of which managers should be aware. We also consider the role of regulations and self-regulation as an influence upon business continuity management. It is important, prior to any attempt to plan for crises, that managers are aware of those legal and regulatory issues that will influence or affect the plans they seek to develop. After all, a business continuity plan which leads to a subsequent breach of law or regulation merely serves to cause a further crisis.
