ABSTRACT

John Jasperse grew up in Rockville, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C., and began taking dance classes during high school. Upon graduating from Sarah Lawrence College in 1985, where he studied liberal arts and dance, he immediately began making group work. Between 1987 and 1993 he worked with Jennifer Monson, who encouraged him to explore bold movements that felt uncharacteristic for his tall, thin body type. He also performed with Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker’s company, Rosas, in Belgium in 1988 and 1989. He formed John Jasperse Company in 1990.
