ABSTRACT

Anna Halprin was raised in rural Winnetka, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, where one of her cherished memories was seeing her Hasidic grandfather dancing in the synagogue. At the University of Wisconsin at Madison she studied dance with Margaret H’Doubler, who taught an objective, anatomical exploration of the body’s movements and encouraged individual creativity. After graduating, Halprin joined her husband, landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she met Bauhaus artists and was influenced by their work. In 1948 Halprin and her husband moved to Marin County near San Francisco, where they have lived ever since. The outdoor dance deck adjacent to her home has been the site of classes, workshops, and performances by Halprin and other dancers, composers, and artists.
