ABSTRACT
It is believed that the first migration to the South Pacific occurred about 30,000 years ago from Southeast Asia with settlements in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. A second, larger migration left Southeast Asia beginning 3,000 years ago and spread throughout the region, including Polynesia and Micronesia, ending in Hawaii and New Zealand as recently as 1,000 years ago.
