ABSTRACT

Lettering and proper sign painting is an art in itself. Lettering styles and fonts painted onto scenic units are chosen by the scenic designer. Many designers include copies of the fonts they have chosen for the signage in the research pack they present to the scenic artist. For layout, a drawing bench should be set up in the shop for complex cartooning projects like signage. The basic sign painting brushes are round-ferrule brushes commonly called quills and flat-ferrule brushes simply called flats or strokes. Quills are best for narrower-width letters and very useful for Gothic fonts because no matter how one rotates the brush, it produces the same width line. As designers are increasingly turning to computer software to generate even their paint elevations, reprographic companies can be very useful for patterning signage as well as motifs and even some images.
