ABSTRACT

Texture should be the first consideration of the scenic artist's process, whether the texture is overt and noticeable or simply a smooth texture for all the paint treatments that are to ensue. Texture mediums should be applied to a clean, primed surface for a good bond between the medium and the surface. Both line thickener and fumed silica filler are very useful for low-laying texture treatments. White polymer glue, such as FlexGlue®can be used to strengthen the bond and durability of texture mediums such as drywall compound or QT mix. Many mediums used to make up texture compounds are brittle or dissolvable in water and must be reinforced with an adhesive. The thick adhesive itself can be used as a texture or enhanced with additives, but are somewhat costly when used for broad texture treatments. Textures can be applied through stencils to create specific, repeating patterns like bricks and cinder blocks. Stencils or stamps can be used to simulate wallpaper.
