ABSTRACT

When approaching a play for the fi rst time, it is often helpful to read it straight through in order to achieve some idea of the fl ow of the play and to allow yourself to form a genuine emotional response. After doing this, going back and rereading the play in order to break it down into very clear pieces is essential. Doing this breakdown helps lay out the important plot events and stage

moments that are of critical importance. Once you see these events and moments clearly, you can make important design decisions that will help the director, actor, and the design team to visually draw attention to these moments.
