ABSTRACT

Having completed the Standard Shots exercise, you will have gotten a taste of what it's like to be a camera operator. I determined what the shots would be, and you made the shots I told you to make. On the set, the director and/or DP will determine what the shots will be, and the operator needs to execute all the shots exactly as he or she has been instructed. Aside from possessing the manual and technical skills needed to execute shots effectively, a good camera operator must be able to discern exactly the framing and movement the director and DP have pictured in their minds. You can see why there is terminology to describe shots: to facilitate communication. But it takes more than that. To be a success as an operator, you must have excellent communication skills. And being psychic doesn't hurt either.
