ABSTRACT

At a time when the Internet has opened the door for so many artists to offer their

recordings to so many people, any discussion about income from recording and the

involvement of record labels needs a brief preface. Artists must have recordings

and live performance of the music from the recordings as the foundation of their

career. Music drives every aspect of artists’ earning potential for themselves and

for the manager who oversees their career. Artists on private labels, indie labels,

and major labels can all have success with their creative efforts. But the difference

between them often is the scale of their success when success is measured in earn-

ings, and earning potential can determine whether a professional manager could or

should become involved in their career.
