ABSTRACT

The Heybridge Basin is near the town of Maldon in Essex, England on the River Blackwater where it meets the Thames estuary. Maldon was an important marine town until transport by road became more economical than transport by water. Until the early 20th century, sailboats transported hay bales, brought from the fields of Essex, to the city of London. There, the hay was needed for horses, still a main mode of transportation.
