ABSTRACT

The ancient and mysterious stone circle of Stonehenge is located in England, about 10 km north of Salisbury, just off the A303 main road. What visitors see today are the remains of a monument erected between 3000 and 1600 BC. The structure is comprised of an outer circle of large upright standing stones, topped by lintels. Inside the circle, five stone pairs, with a lintel across each pair, once formed a horseshoe. The structure is aligned so that the horseshoe opens to the rising sun at the midsummer solstice. The final image of Stonehenge was made from a hopeless looking negative. Nevertheless, heavy print manipulation restored the feeling of mystery that surrounds this ancient site. https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780240816265/ffb21561-2f2c-4dca-99ec-f086fc154d4d/content/figch66_u1_OC.jpg" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/>
