ABSTRACT

The Session View serves as both a musical sketchpad and a traditional track mixer. The term sketchpad comes from the fact that it was designed as a real-time launching base for all of your musical ideas, musical motives, beats, riffs, and much more. The Session View is free of a fixed timeline, opening up the possibility for experimentation, improvisation, and real-time development of musical ideas without ever stopping the creative workflow—in this case, literally Live’s playback. This makes it an ideal place to sketch out your ideas before you know how they should evolve, how long they should remain, and where they should go in your arrangement or production. The workflow can be as simple as this: create an instrument, build a phrase with clips, layer on more tracks, and then launch various clips while reacting to the musical moment. The idea is to let sounds and grooves inspire how you create. In this way, the Session View makes Live a musical instrument, in the studio and onstage. This what makes Live so different and potentially intimidating.
