ABSTRACT

The Noise & Grain effects all deal with noise in some form or another. Some effects add noise, while others remove it. A couple of these effects—Fractal Noise and Turbulent Noise—are in a class all on their own, as they create grayscale patterns. This chapter looks at a few important concepts to help the readers and to provide an overview of what is coming up. In the Noise & Grain category of effects, there is a large elephant in the room. The Dust & Scratches effect attempts to remove the small blemishes that often occur with film. It achieves this by blending visual anomalies into the background. The controls are similar to those found in blur effects. Spline noise type can take significantly longer to render, but it also can produce much more organic textures because of its smoothness. It’s the Billy Dee Williams of noise types.
